CHAPTER SIXTEEN

4:40 PM

UNKNOWN LOCATION

The light from the computer screen bathed the interior of the room a light blue hue. The man sitting at the keyboard took a swig of water, draining the contents before tossing the bottle to the floor with the others. In his left hand, he fidgeted with the keychain sitting atop the desk. The loop contained various keys for throughout the facility—an acting reminder of the duty he’d willingly accepted. Only a fervid sense of responsibility kept him from tossing the keys in the waste bin.

This was supposed to be different.

Finishing the operation still meant something. Perhaps it was pride, or stubbornness, but it wouldn’t make a difference in the end. Not if he abandoned now. Loading the software, he tapped out a string of commands, issuing a connection to the server and requesting a direct line. When the connection was made, he took a deep breath and typed in his report. The isolated lines hung on the page for more than a minute before a return message was delivered. The message was short and direct. Anyone searching for clues would indicate a sense of annoyance in the tone of the response, and that was justified. The operation had not gone according to plan. The assembly had been ill-fated from the beginning. He’d raised all the flags, but there was no changing course now.

They were chosen for a reason.

The man terminated the connection and closed the software interface. Then he got up from his chair and turned off the office light before he left the room.
